A BLUE & WHITE AMERICANA STYLE LIVING ROOM (AND A CLAD HOME SALE!)

In honor of the upcoming 4th of July festivities, we thought it was only appropriate to fill you in on our newest decorating project, a very Americana-style blue and white living room in a secluded house on Beachwood Canyon here in LA.  Way up in the treetops overlooking a ravine, it feels like a retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.  Our client wants a comfortable beachy vibe that mixes elements of both traditional and bohemian.  Since that's pretty much what our style tends to be here, we're up for the challenge.

Here's the mood board for the living room. The daybed will be covered in our vintage African indigos that we love so, and the pillows will be plentiful.   A capiz shell light fixture references the sea.  The floors and ceiling beams of the home are very dark wood so the white sofas and lighter wood accents will help keep the room bright and cozy.

This mood board began from the bottom up, literally. The first task was to choose a rug, and this Dash&Albert striped number was the perfect fit.  Using a stripe on the floor frees us up to mix up lots of more organic patterns on the daybed and pillows (you can brush up on my rules for mixing prints and patterns with my tutorial ... it doesn't have to be as scary as it can seem!)

The next order of business was a custom wall unit our carpenter is building.  The piece will be all white, off-setting the dark floors and beams and keeping the space airy and bright.

The living room gets a ton of light, so window treatments are also important. Warm, homey-toned bamboo window shades with white linen curtain panels will add lots of natural texture, along with our jute rugs and possibly a seagrass backing on the bookcase like I did in this project.

Okay, we know you have a ton of BBQs to head out to, so here are just a few more inspiration photos to start your Holiday weekend!
